Gorgeous desk renewed in Ash and dark walnut stain

brentmacneil

I picked this desk up from a family who was moving out of the neighbourhood after 18 years. When I saw it, I knew I had to have it.

Once I brought it home, I was impressed with the condition and quality. This piece is solid wood. It is hard to find a piece is such good condition with all the hardware intact.

I contemplated on colour and settled on Coal Black from MFP as I had a little left and knew this colour had great coverage. I look at this as an ultra masculine piece and am on the fence if I should keep it for myself. 😀

I sanded the top down to the natural grain and stained it using Dark Walnut. The remainder of the piece got 3 coats of paint. As much as I loved the look I thought I would add a little distressing by running some sandpaper along the lines of the piece. After doing this to the drawers, I knew I made the right decision and continued with the rest of the piece. The subtle colour of the wood grain popping through the black gives it a classic yet modern rustic look.

I decided to keep the original hardware but ran some steel wool over them to make some of the antique gold pop through. Again, I was happy with the decision as it ties in well with the distressing on the piece.

The stained top was protected with 2 coats of tung oil and the paint was protected with a natural sealer.

I hope you guys like it as much as I do.
