Vanity in Coal Black Fusion Mineral Paint

brentmacneil

This is the second piece of three that I received from Michelle and Sean. I have done a few vanities to date so I was excited to get started on it.

Ash or Coal Black with stained drawers and top? People may say there is little difference between Ash and Coal Black but I disagree. I knew once the drawers were stained it would draw out various hues of red, brown and black so I decided Coal Black from FMP was the way to go.

After sanding the drawers and table top to the natural grain, I applied a coat of Dark Walnut stain. I then added 2 coats of tung oil to bring out the richness in the wood grain. The table top was protected further with a coat of matte polycrylic.

The remainder of the piece including the mirror was sanded removing almost all of the existing topcoat and stain and then painted in 3 coats of Coal Black. The paint was protected further with a coat of homemade food grade beeswax.

I was on the fence about painting the hardware in satin bronze but I knew if I did, I would sacrifice details for colour. I decided to keep them original and gave them a thorough scrubbing and buffed them with beeswax. I think I made the right decision as I love the end result.

I was looking for a sophisticated, moody piece and I think I was able to achieve this by going with Coal Black over Ash.

I see this piece as a traditional vanity, an entrance table or even a desk since the mirror can be removed easily without any tools. However it is used, this piece will no doubt be a focal point in any room.

I would like to thank Michelle and Sean for the piece and am hoping they like it knowing this was passed down from their mother.
