That's a wrap folks!!!!! Here is the matching bar/server and sideboard to the dining table that I completed last week for Brenda.
The tops of both pieces including the inside and trim of the bar/server was stained with dark walnut as well as the top drawer on both pieces. Initially we stained the 3 drawers on the sideboard but did not like it so we decided to paint the lower 2 drawers which looked much better. All stained portions received 3 coats of matte polycrylic to add durability and to keep the sheen low.
The remainder of the piece was painted with 3 coats of Ash from FMP. All paint was protected with a coat of homemade foodgrade beeswax.
At first Brenda was on the fence with keeping the existing handles but wanted them in black. I had my doubts so I painted 1 to show her and we quickly agreed it did not work to modernize the look of the set. The hole to hole on the existing handles is 87mm which is uncommon so this posed a challenge. If we painted all the drawers it would not have been an issue but since they were stained I spent hours trying to find something that would fit. I eventually found drop handles that worked albeit having to drill new holes but when they arrived they looked bad...really bad. Eventually I was able to find these handles that are adjustable to fit varying hole to hole widths. A perfect fit and in matte black. 👍🏼
I want to thank Brenda for the work and for her communicating with me when needed. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with people like Brenda. I had a lot of fun.
Lastly, this shows what can be done with your old golden oak furniture. Before you give up and toss these quality pieces out to purchase newer, inferior quality pieces, give a thought in having them refinished. There are a lot of talented people out there to assist you, including me. 😀
