I received this desk from a customer who initially wanted it refinished. Unfortunately when they dropped it off, they asked for a lot of extras than the original quote and decided they no longer wanted it. While it was an unfortunate experience, I was happy to keep it knowing my daughters could use it.
The piece was in rough shape when it was brought to me. It was used to do stained glass work and had lots of glass pieces and staining throughout the piece. It was also stored in a garage and had a lot of staining from mice on the legs and throughout the piece as well.🤢
After a thorough cleaning, I sanded the desk down, including the top to the bare wood.
Knowing the room was just painted in a beautiful blue from Annie Sloan's wall paint line (Pemberley Blue), my daughter was looking for a colour that would compliment it.
I have done a few other pieces in Annie Sloan's Country Grey Chalk paint that my daughter kept for herself so she wanted the desk in the same colour. Wise choice!!!
After 3 coats of Country Grey, I threw down a base coat of clear wax and then added some dark wax to give it an aged look throughout the piece.
I wanted to keep the top light so I diluted some Country Grey with water and did a wash on the bare wood. Once dry, I added 2 coats of matte water based polycrylic for protection.
I think the piece is very elegant and clean looking and am happy my daughter selected this finish. We all know how creative one can get with Annie Sloan Chalk paint but it also can be used to achieve a clean, smooth, elegant finish.
Next up is finding a chair that works well with the piece and refinishing it. Currently we are using an Ikea chair that works, but when the right chair comes a long, I will refinish it for Chloe.
