Sideboard from trash to beauty

brentmacneil

I found this piece a few weeks ago on the curb down the street from me as my neighbor left it out since he is moving. I instantly liked the size and how it was not that deep. I immediately thought this piece would look great as a media and T.V. unit. I loaded my truck and was back home unloading it in my garage within 5 minutes.

Considering I know I am painting the room in Annie Sloan's Canvas, I wanted another softer colour to compliment the Canvas. At first I was going to paint it in Annie Sloan's French Linen but decided to paint it in Chateau Grey which appears to be a lesser used colour these days. It is more of a soft green then a grey.

After a thorough clean, I sanded the piece as well as the top that I took down to the bare wood. Once done, I painted the piece in 3 coats of Chateau Grey. Next up was a coat of clear wax followed by a coat of white wax that I applied with a chip brush to give it the finish I was looking for. I concentrated on a bit more white wax in the lines and creases and love the finish.

Next up was the top. I was undecided on a Country Grey wash or a Provincial or Dark Walnut stain. I sanded out the edge of the top in the back and applied a bit of each. As suspected, the wash did not work with the grain, and the Provincial Stain made it orange, so I went with Dark Walnut. Once stained, 2 coats of polycrylic was added for protection.

The last thing to do was refinish the existing hardware that was black. I decided to refinish them with blasts of Satin Bronze and Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint giving it a unique, rustic bronze colour the matched the hinges.

Wall painted in Annie Sloan Canvas wall paint.
