Adorable secretary desk in custom blend Fusion Mineral Paint

brentmacneil

This desk/dresser was gifted to me by one of my regular customers who's neighbour left it out on the curb. After Terresa sent me a pic, I told her to grab it for me. I am a big fan of secretary desks.

Initially I mixed some leftover green and yellow paint and although I liked the colour, it just did not feel right one this piece. Once again, I saw blue on this pieces with gold handles. I looked over my inventory and had 1/2 a jar of Homestead blue and a 1/4 jar casement (which I am not fond of) so I mixed it together for a custom colour that I call "Lily-Bug Blue" after my other daughter.

As per the norm, I sanded the entire piece inside and out to the natural grain. After that, I applied 3 coats of the blue to the body of the piece. I then selected Dark Walnut as the stain of choice for inside the cabinet as it complimented the blue quite well.

Initially I thought the existing handles would work but because I was going for an ultra clean piece, I decided to grind off the ram head looking part of the handle to see how it would look without it. I was pleasantly surprised with the result (see photo) and was able to achieve my goal. Once done, I let the hardware soak in vinegar overnight to clean them. Next morning I painted all the hardware in Pure Gold spray paint. Again, I was pleasantly surprised with the result.

Once putting the hardware on the piece I did not like the tarnished dirty look of the hinges on the door so I pulled both off and painted them in Pure Gold as well. Finally, the piece came together.

The last steps was to put 2 coats of Tung Oil on the stain and put a protected coat of homemade, foodgrade beeswax on the paint.

My initial vision for this piece was something different then what I ended up with but I am happy with the result. It feels good to step away from what I traditionally do. You know me, I like to gamble and step out of my comfort zone on my own pieces.

The pics show this piece more blue in some pics and a bit green in others. In person it is more blue then green.

I big shout out to Terresa for looking out for me.
