Ash sideboard

brentmacneil

After doing a bedroom set and living room tables for Liz she was looking for a sideboard for her newly renovated home. I had a piece that she initially wanted but after seeing her decor I told her it would not be a good fit.

After sending a few pieces on Marketplace she found this one and I told her to grab it. She wanted an Ash/stain combo and I had little issue accommodating.

I immediately had a design in mind and she was on board. Initially I thought the designs of the top and doors where glued on and could be sanded out but that was not the case. Once the top was sanded, I showed Liz that the design was all wood and that I would try staining the top to see how it would work and go from there. Unfortunately it did not work so we opted to paint the top but leave the molding stained. Problem solved. The next challenge was the vertical woodwork between the doors. It was a different wood then the rest of the piece therefore making the stain a bit darker. It initially bothered me, especially under certain light but knew the tung oil applied to the stained trim would change things. Thankfully it worked.

The next hurdle was the existing hardware looking a bit small and dated. I had 3 oil rubbed antiqued knobs that worked wonders and Liz approved. An order was put in for more knobs, so another issue resolved.

The 3 coats of Ash MFP used on the piece was protected with homemade foodgrade beeswax while the Dark Walnut stained trim was protected with 2 coats of tung oil.

Overall, the piece went through a complete transformation from your typical brown sideboard into a rich looking sophisticated conversation piece.

Please check all pics for the transformation from before to after.
