Handsome Hutch in Ash Fusion Mineral Paint

brentmacneil

This is the 3rd and final piece I received from Sean and Michelle. Since I have been doing a lot of ornate detailed pieces lately it was a welcome change to work on something with smooth, clean lines.

Surprisingly I had plans to paint the exterior white, while staining the interior and legs. I figured this would give it a nice classic, clean look.

After sanding down the body and legs, I jumped on the shelves. Although it took forever to sand, I liked the direction it was going.

Next up was the inside and this is where things took a turn. It was next to impossible to remove the topcoat and stain, especially on the back panel. This left me to "pivot". It seems pivoting has become a common theme with me lately.😡

As many of you know, white is not really my thing. I did not want to do white inside and out so I opted for contrast using Ash FMP on the outside and Raw Silk FMP on the inside to give the piece some depth.

Although the exterior was in good shape, the interior was a bit weathered from use over the years. There was a lock on the one door without a key so I decided to remove that and add a teardrop pull which I think works really well.

I had to remove the glass to clean it and once removed, I painted the entire exterior of the hutch as well as the inside of the doors in 3 coats of Ash. I then painted the interior and shelves with MANY coats of Raw Silk.

Knowing the interior and shelves will take abuse, I added a coat of polycrylic for protection. The remainder of the piece was protected with a coat of homemade food grade beeswax.

After cleaning the glass, I had the task of putting it back in utilizing the same trim. Honestly, I did not enjoy this at all.😀

Once the trim was on, the doors would not close since it was hitting the edge of the shelves but the Dremel fixed that problem. After this, I installed a magnet to keep the door closed.

All said and done I was still able to achieve my goal of giving the piece a nice clean classic look. I am hoping it will find a new home soon.
