Sometimes in life you need to let someone know just how special they are. My wife has a co-worker who has been a vital team member and a valued friend. Over the years I have listened to my wife speak so highly of Itzel on many levels. I often snuck onto my wife's computer and would say hi to Itzel just for fun. My wife recently got promoted and Itzel has remained a supportive team member and my wife and I are grateful for her support.
Recently Itzel purchased a new home and the process has been tough on her. My wife and I discussed getting her a house warming gift and I mentioned doing a piece for her. Itzel liked a restored chest I did with hairpin legs so we starting looking online. Unfortunately there was not much to choose from. I had a chest from another client that was here for a while and I reached out to Teri to see if she still wanted the piece. I told Teri what I had in mind and she liked the idea and gifted it to me.
Itzel who is Mexican is very proud of her heritage so Christine thought of doing a Mexican theme. Initially she though of a yellow base coat in Prairie Sunset from MFP and then doing some colorful flowers/suns. We kept throwing ideas around but at the same time were getting nervous.
During a chat about furniture with Itzel, she showed Christine something she liked and to Christine's delight it was a clean and simple piece. This would be a challenge after tearing apart the chest I had, filling holes and applying 3 coats of paint. I told my wife I could gamble and do a faux stain wood look over the paint.
I grabbed some pine fence board painted it and applied some Brown Cream wax to one section and Dark Walnut stain to another. I played with both to make it look like a stained wood grain and both looked good. My wife initially went with the Brown Cream wax, so off I went.
After applying 1 coat of the wax on the piece with a sponge it looked great but a bit light. We also agreed it needed to look more rustic. I made the call to apply the dark walnut stain over top of the wax. It took a bit more work feathering it on but we achieved the rustic look we were looking for.
The next step was adding some colour using Prairie Sunset and some stencils. Two simple artistic suns and BOOM! After that, it was adding the handles and legs and we were done.
I think we achieved the look we were hoping for after pivoting. We hope Itzel likes it as we have yet to drop it off.
I would to thank Teri Green for gifting me the chest. Teri, you will forever remain the Real OG.
