Out of the blue I received a text from Kim asking if I would be interested in purchasing a bedroom set that she had in storage for a while. Once seeing a pic of a tallboy and an end table, I was excited and said I had no issue purchasing the set if the remainder was in good shape. Why excited? This set was a beautiful MCM set with amazing lines. I knew these would be special refinished.
Time passed and I received another text saying the entire set was in the garage and ready for pick up. Once there I was greeted by Kim's husband in his very cozy garage where the set was waiting for me. To my delight the set was even more impressive in person. I loved the design, lines and hardware on every piece, especially this tallboy. Kim's husband and I chatted for a while, looked at other pieces in their house before I loaded the set up in the truck and made my way home.
I knew I wanted to do this piece in Ash or Coal Black from FMP mixed with Dark Walnut stain but was flipping back and forth. I even did a poll on IG asking my followers what I should do the piece in. Interestingly enough more people picked Coal Black and this was where I was leaning prior to the poll.
After sanding the entire piece down to the natural grain I painted the body in 3 coats of Coal Black. I then stained all the drawers in Dark Walnut and this is where things got interesting. The wood grain on the 2 upper drawers where a different grain then the 3 lower drawers and the stain looked much different on the 2 grains. I liked the stain on the 2 upper drawers more then the lower ones so I painted the 3 bottom drawers in Coal Black. Once doing this I knew this was going to be a winner since the handles on the lower drawers were large and once painted would pop against the Coal Black.
Next was the hardware which was scrubbed and refinished in satin bronze.
Homemade food grade beeswax was added for protection on the painted portion of the piece while the stained drawers were protected with a matte polycrylic.
I think the end result is amazing. The finishes and colours selected on this dresser really come together to make this piece sophisticated and sleek.
So, if this piece excites you, know that I have the matching 12 drawer dresser and 2 end tables to complete the set.
As seen in the pics, the entire set is from Vic Art which is a highly sought after furniture company in Canada known for manufacturing top quality MCM pieces. What also intrigued me was that each piece has wheels that are tucked away so each piece can be moved easily. Sweet feature!!!!!
I would like to thank Kim and her husband for reaching out to me and for following me. Interestingly, Kim and I worked together and remember eachother from a few years ago. It is always nice to reconnect with good people.😀
