Coffee table in custom blend Fusion Mineral Paint

brentmacneil

This coffee table was one of 3 pieces I purchased from someone locally that has been sitting in the basement for well over a year. When I brought it home, my wife asked, "are you keeping that thing"? Quite honestly, the fact it sat for so long indicates I had my doubts as well. It was forest green with an orange top with oversized wood knobs. Need I say more?

Since summer is over and I am ramping up for commission work, I figured I would tackle this piece with one of my blue paint concoctions. This blue is a mix of the other blues I made for my other pieces. I mixed my "Lily Bug Blue" with my "Chloe Bear Blue" with a bit of Ash MFP to make "Chilly Bear Blue" to honour my beautiful daughters.😀

I sanded the piece down to the wood grain and added 3 coats of blue including the inside cubby (which is awesome). After that I used Dark Walnut on the top but was not overly happy with it so I used some "secret techniques" to make it a bit more rustic and I love the results.

Next thing to do was replacing the knobs with some from my inventory that were painted matte black. Then it was on to drybrushing the piece with Ash paint to make it more modern rustic. Once the that was done, I applied a coat of beeswax on the paint and 2 coats of tung oil on the stain.

This one is one of my favourite transformations considering the before and after. I love the stained top with the blue and drybrushing. It was unexpected for sure.

As you can see, this table has foldable leafs on each end but what I like the most is the cubby hole in the bottom that can slide open on either side. This is a very functional table as a whole.

Please see before and after pics.
