Custom Blue Tall Boy

brentmacneil

Quite a while ago I sent Jean a message as per her request but never heard from her until last week. She sent me a picture of this MCM waterfall dresser asking if I wanted it and I immediately said yes. She also told me that she has some furniture she wanted to have refinished once she moved into her new home. An absolute win for me on both accounts.

This past week I made my way to Jean and her husband's home in Erin to grab the dresser and to look over her incredible collection of furniture.

I was amazed at the condition of the dresser they were giving me and more amazed at the collection of furniture they had in their home. Every piece was top quality and in absolutely amazing condition. Jean's concern is being able to take all the pieces she has and how they would fit in to their more "modern", new home. I reassured her more then once that it will be easy to modernized all the pieces she has to make it work and I think she happy to hear this.

On to the piece....as you can see from the before pic, the piece is in amazing condition. I believe I found 2 chips on the piece and that is it. It is refreshing to have a piece where little to no restoration is required prior to refinishing.

As most of you know, my pallete leans heavily towards darker colours, so I figured I would go lighter on this one. Lighter to me still means no white.😀

The issue I have is that I have very little lighter colours in my inventory except for a few I am not overly fond of. I also have a number of colours in jars that are about 10-20% left, so what to do? How about a mix of several colours and come up with a unique, one of a kind custom colour? Brilliant idea!!!!

So...here we are!!! What colour is this exactly? I have no idea!!! Was this what I was looking for? Nope!!!! I wanted a lighter green then Bayberry FMP but darker then Sage Green from FMP. The problem was after mixing 4 colours from FMP, I did not have enough Bayberry to make it darker. What I came up with I would consider a Sage Green with a hint of Blue/Grey. What I can say is that I appreciate that the colour changes in the light as you can see already in certain angles of the pics.

Knowing the colour was relatively soft, I felt it was appropriate to soften the drawers after sanding them by adding a subtle white wash too them. This was accomplished by watering down some Raw Silk by FMP. The combo of paint and washed drawers complimented eachother very well. Admittedly, the drawers were more washed prior to adding a polycyrlic topcoat which darkened them a bit but the drawers remain soft nonetheless.

After stripping the entire piece by sanding and adding 3 costs of the custom paint, beeswax was added for protection.

Although the drawers work flawlessly, beeswax was added to the bottom of each drawer and on the slider/gliders to make them open and close effortlessly.

"But where are the handles" you ask? At the bottom of each drawer are two cups inset where you pull the drawer open and closed. With the custom colour and hidden handles, it certainly makes the piece one of a kind.

Please see before and after pics.
