I saw this dresser that Debra posted on Marketplace and it reminded me of a prior piece I did so I decided I had to have it. Initially someone wanted it so it was "pending" but luckily for me they never picked it up, so it was mine.
When I went to grab it I was surprised how clean and big it was. It worked out well because it appears I will be customizing some other pieces for Debra, so a win/win for me.
Like the other piece I did, I saw this in Ash from MFP and Dark Walnut stain. Initially I stained the top and all the drawers and painted the body, posts and mirror but didn't like it. I felt the drawers were too big stained and it just wasn't speaking to me. I decided to paint the bottom 2 drawers and keep the others stained, and believe I made the right call.
I planned on keeping the original hardware but after painting the drawers, the scale was off. The extra wide drawers and the small handles didn't look good. I decided to use the original handles from the two bottom drawers but relocated them to the upper smaller drawers and added new pulls on the 2 bottom drawers. Once again, I think I made the right call as the scale works much better. I had to paint the top handles with blasts of bronze and oil rubbed spray paint to match the pulls. Again...no problem, it worked.
After 3 coats of paint, I ran some sandpaper along most of the lines on the piece that would typically show wear to give it a rustic/distressed look. I then applied 2 coats of tung oil on all the stained sections of the dresser while I put a sealer on the remainder of the piece.
What do you think of the end result? To me, it is a winner.
