Handsome Hutch in Ash

brentmacneil

Here is another piece I was fortunate to pick up from Lesley and her family who were in the process of moving and downsizing. When I first got it, I sanded it immediately before the snow hit and it has sat calling my name ever since.

If you know me, Ash is my favourite colour and I have been twitching since I went on a white bender for a bit.

After sanding and cleaning the entire piece, I decided to take the mickey mouse ears off the top and go with a sleek look. Next up was to pull the trim off the inside of the door to take the insert out to be painted.

After painting the insert, I painted 3 coats of Ash FMP on the exterior of the hutch with a coat of homemade food grade beeswax for protection.

I then removed the bottom drawer, sanded it to it's natural grain and finished in Dark Walnut Stain with 2 coats of poly for protection.

I then removed the two shelves , sanded them and painted them in 3 coats of Ash. A coat of waterbased poly was added for protection.

Since the interior of the hutch was in great shape I decided to keep it original but added a coat of Restore to make it look brand new.

The last thing was to clean the existing hardware and and paint them in pure gold.

Beeswax was added to the the drawers, sliders and hinges to make everything function smoothly.

I think the before and after speaks for itself and the colours selections and finishes on this piece make it a sleek and sexy beast.
