Sideboard in Custom Blue Fusion Mineral Paint

brentmacneil

I picked up this sideboard along with a matching hutch from a family in Georgetown who were renovating their home and wanted them gone. When I saw the post I told them I wanted them, no questions ask.

When I got there I was amazed at the quality, condition and the size of the piece. This thing is a behemoth.

Once at home this brontosaurus took up a ton of room but I loved it. Months passed by and I decided I wanted to keep the piece for myself and use it in our living room as an entertainment unit. That changed once I received another sideboard that will take up a bit less room. So...back on the market the beluga goes.

I was flip flopping on Ash, Bayberry and my custom blue. I figured due to the details in the wood, Ash would be out since I wanted to drybrush it. I was low on Bayberry and am currently working on a piece in that colour so I decided I would do it in my custom Blue. For this piece we will call it one of the three: "Beluga Blue", "Brontosaurus Blue"or "Behemoth Blue". You pick!

Since I was low in the blue I needed to get some Seaside Blue to add to the mix and top it up. A phone call to Tina @thebarndoorstudio fixed that problem.

Once mixed, I then cleaned and sanded the piece. The piece itself was walnut which is one of my favorite woods to work with. I spent HOURS sanding the legs as the plan was to stain the top and legs and paint the rest.

I knew right away the legs were not walnut and I suspected that the legs would come out much darker then the top once stained. Well...I was right.😡😡

Instead of jumping and painting the legs right away I decided to finish the piece off entirely to see how it would balance out.

The entire piece was painted in 3 coats of my custom blend of FMP. I then used Coal Black FMP to drybrush the entire piece to add further detail throughout. As stated, the top and legs were stained in Dark Walnut but after everything was done, I painted and drybrushed both the legs and trim on the top since they were different grains of wood. Once done, the piece came together beautifully.

I loved the existing knobs so I kept them as is, just cleaned them up, rubbed some stain on them and added some beeswax to make them pop. The painted portions of the piece were protected with homemade food grade beeswax and the stained top was protected with 3 coats of tung oil. I decided to tung oil the inside of the bottom drawers to freshen them up. They look brand new now.

I did a video this week stating I would have the piece done on Tuesday, to which it was but staging took a bit longer then anticipated. Unfortunately lighting this time of year is a challenge. We were still not able to capture the richness of the blue and details in the drybrushing. This piece and details change with the lighting beautifully, especially in lower lighting. Unfortunately, lower lighting to the eye and camera are two different things.

We had staged to take pics with the bottom doors open to capture the fact they can take full wine bottles but the lighting worked against us. The drawers provide lots of space and are very deep.

This piece can be used in many ways, from a traditional sideboard, an entertainment cabinet to a conversation piece in any room. This badboy needs to be seen in person to appreciate the beauty and detail.

I would like to thank Tina @thebarndoorstudio for the Seaside Blue to make my custom blue.
