Hutch transformation

George initially reached out to me during the pandemic and inquired about doing a desk from him but I did not hear from him again until this week. We chatted a bit and he sent me some pics of this entertainment unit and he told me he wanted me to finish it in "Dirty Man Rustic". I sent him some pics of my recent work and he picked a few, so "Dirty Man Rustic" it was.🤪

A day later he dropped the piece off and well, it was loaded with this robin's egg blue chalk paint. There were thick paint streaks in every direction, runs everywhere as well a large stickers that were painted over (see pic). Since I like my paint and stain combo, this is where I started. After 6 pads of 80 grit sandpaper with the orbital sander and two 60 grit belts on the belt sander I got through the layers of chalk paint, varnish and stain to get to the awesome wood grain. I stained the drawers, and the top of the dresser and cabinet in dark walnut and protected it with 3 coats of tung over. Since it came out as dark as it did we decided to go with Ash MFP over Hazelwood.

After taking the orbital sander to the remainder of the piece I found a few large stickers that were painted over and blasted my way through that. Once done, the rest of the piece was painted in 3 coats of Ash MFP and protected with homemade foodgrade beeswax. George wanted to keep the original hardware silver and what George wants, George gets. 😀

Since the unit came in 2 pieces they were finished accordingly and not put together until both pieces were done. Prior to putting it together, I sent some pics to my European BFF and she told me the piece was "handsome". So, I will fuse the two together and say the piece is a "Handsome Dirty Man Rustic" entertainment unit.

You are welcome to check my page for other available pieces to purchase or simply follow me as I post pieces weekly. I also have an Instagram account under the same name.
