Rose Water Buffet

brentmacneil

It is hard to believe, isn't it? Nope, there is nothing wrong with your eyes. Of all things....PINK!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤣🤣🤣

Maxine reached out to me last week saying she saw my work and asked if I had any sideboards available. I told her I had 3 unfinished ones in my inventory and sent her pics of this one and 2 others. To my surprise she gravitated to this one saying it had a ton of potential. I was surprised only because I have shared this piece with others and they always passed on it. I agreed with Maxine and knew once finished it would be a one of a kind.

Maxine and I went back and forth on colours and designs and right off the hop, I knew although she appreciated my input, she was independent in her choices. She started with Ash, then jumped to Bayberry, both of which incorporated some stain on the piece. She was uncertain of keeping the original hardware at this point. I reassured her that either colour would work and both would work with the original hardware. I would have been happy to replace the handles and use them elsewhere because I love them. We ended off the conversation with her sitting on things and for her to get back to me.

I followed up with her and she shifted gears again, thinking about going lighter. She reached out to me later and mentioned going PINK!!!!!!!! At first I did not know what to think but reminded myself I worked for her and if pink is what she wants, then pink is what she gets.🤪

I sent Maxine pics of pieces in the 3 pink colours Fusion carries and suggested her to go to the Barn Door Studio to look at the colours in person. Her selection....Rose Water FMP.

Once Maxine picked up the paint she came to my house to drop it off and we discussed design ideas further. I mentioned doing a light wash on the top with a topcoat and the same to 1 or 3 of the drawers but she mentioned painting the entire thing. In this case I agreed with her and was happy she was confident in her decision. After seeing the piece in person, she also felt it was best to keep the original hardware and to paint them in gold. I suggested 2 colours for the hardware, 1 being pure gold and the other satin bronze. I told her I thought satin bronze would look best but left that decision with her.

By the time Maxine got home I sent her pics and videos of 2 knobs I painted in the aforementioned golds. To her surprise and my delight she liked satin bronze. DONE...the design portion of the project was DONE!!!!!

As per the norm, I removed all the topcoat and stain on the piece to prep for painting. Since the pink is light, the entire piece took 5 coats of paint. I removed the 2 doors to paint them seperately due to the amount of detail in the inlays. Once painted, the entire piece was protected in homemade foodgrade beeswax. I did put a coat of poly on the top initially for added protection but it changed the colour a bit so I had to sand it and put 2 more coats of paint on it.

After the hardware was scrubbed they were painted in satin bronze, including the nails that hold some of the hardware in place.

The last thing to do was to freshen up the inside of the 2 end doors with some Restore. This got rid of all of the scratches and nicks making the inside look new.

Would I have used this colour on my own sideboard? No chance!!! Do I think the piece and the colour selections work together? Hell yes!!!! Sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone and try something new. When Maxine selected this colour I was happy, selfishly knowing it would help to diversify my portfolio.😀

Maxine has yet to see the piece finished and I hope she likes what she sees in this post prior to picking it up. I think this will be the conversation piece in her newly renovated home office.
