Side tables complete transformation in Ash Fusion Mineral Paint

brentmacneil

I received a random text from Terry who asked me how much I would charge for these end tables. Immediately I told him that the pieces were awesome. I also asked him if they were restored from a vanity. At that point he had not purchased the tables but I told him to do so since they were awesome and I could make them look amazing.

Well...here we are, so obviously he bought them. Initially he wanted them in black but then thought to strip them and put an oil on them to match the decor in his room. I told him we could give it a try and go from there.

Once Terry got here, the tables looked better in person. Yes, the colour was horrid, yes the paint was lathered on poorly but the look and lines of the tables were amazing.

At quick inspection, the paint was a chalk paint which is tough to strip but there was zero prep done and it was painted directly over the top coat which was good. Terry and I agreed that I would get hold of him once I dug into the piece and we would figure out where to go from there.

A few hours after Terry left I was digging away at the piece. Just my luck that the tables had 5 layers of paint, topcoat, faux stain (paint), topcoat then stain...just like the dining room table I finished. MY FAVOURITE!!!!!🤢🤮

After sanding and scraping, things got even more interesting. The tables consisted of various types of wood. From experience this often does not turn out well if being fully stained or oiled. I shared this with Terry and we pivoted and went back to Ash or Coal Black and stain. After looking over the photos he sent of his room with the bed I previously refinished for him, I favored Ash from FMP and he agreed.

It was also found that these tables were indeed part of a vanity. This was not a big deal and not uncommon. Whoever did the work did an amazing job.

After sanding and scraping off 75% of the layers I added 3 coats of Ash on the body of the tables. I sanded the top completely to the natural grain. After doing some antiquing to the trim to better match the top, I stained the entire top and trim in Dark Walnut.

I added a coat of home made food grade beeswax to the paint for added protection and added 3 coats of tung oil to the stain for protection and added pizzazz.👌👌👌

I decided to keep the hardware as is since it had a nice patina to it. Unfortunately both knobs are bent but it is hard to notice.

I have come to know Terry well since this is his 3rd time bringing pieces for me to "renew" and I am fairly confident he and his wife will be happy with the transformation. I would like to thank Terry again for the work.
