Tall boy in coal black

brentmacneil

If you follow me regularly you may recognize this piece. A while back I did a post on some inventory I picked up asking if anyone would be interested in any custom work. One of my followers and prior customer, Melanie reached out about this piece and the matching dresser. We chatted a bit, made the deal and she told me she wanted this done in Coal Black from FMP.

While the piece was in great shape overall, the owner removed all of the hardware on the piece before I picked it up. No big deal! There were many drawer stoppers missing as well as some trim that keep the internal drawers aligned. Again, no big deal.

Instead of buying new drawer stoppers I made some with leftover trim I had lying around. I used the same trim to solve the the aforementioned drawer alignment issue. With some simple measurements, cuts, nails, glue and clamping, everything is like new again.

Next up was the prep work. The piece was scrapped/stripped and sanded down to the bare wood. After this, 3 coats of Coal Black was added.

Melanie brought some knobs she picked up and wanted 2 knobs on each upper drawer as opposed to the existing singular knob. I filled the holes, measured and aligned the knobs to match the knobs on the large lower drawer and installed them accordingly.

Unfortunately, the pics don't do the piece justice due to lighting. We did our best to wait for the best time but we have so many windows in the area that it washes the pics a bit and creates an unnecessary sheen. It looks much better in person. Although it is painted, you can still see the wood grain of the white walnut underneath. It is very unique.

Stay tuned for the matching dresser that I am almost finished for Melanie. It is a colour that you have not seen in a while. 🫣
