Check this Tall Boy redone in Ash Fusion Mineral Paint

Courtney has been a longtime follower and supporter so when she asked if I would do a dresser given to her by her grandmother I said "yes".

After sending pics we discussed colour choices and she liked the Ash/Dark Walnut stained looked so at least I had some direction.

2 weeks ago she texted me saying she would be in town to drop-off the dresser and we finally met.

Once seeing the piece, it was clean piece made by Hibbard so the quality was there. I knew right off the hop the piece would have to be stripped completely to the bare wood since it had a thick layer of high sheen varnish. It was a yellow colour as opposed to brown/orange colour in the pics. Only structural challenge was the bottom drawer would not close and the top drawer was very tight closing.

We shared some ideas and I gave her finishing scenarios and we parted ways. Much like her texts, Courtney was a pleasure to chat with and I was happy to be working with her.

The first step was to strip the piece entirely by sanding which took the greater part of a day. The next step was to let the handles sit in vinegar over night to be cleaned.

The initial thought was to paint the body and frame in Ash MFP, stain the drawers in Dark Walnut and redo the handles in matte black paint.

Once putting it together I wasn't a fan of the look or the way the stain came out on some of the drawers. I shared this with a few videos and suggested we keep the top drawer stained and paint the remainder of the drawers in Ash , yet keep the square overlay boxes around the handles so

the black handles would not blend right in to the Ash. This was an initial scenario I had as well while brainstorming for design ideas, so all was not lost.

Once complete, I sent some videos to Courtney and she shared it with her family and grandmother and they loved it.

From there I planed the two bottom drawers so they moved freely. I also added beeswax to all the sliding wood parts on the drawers and everything slides like butter now.

After applying 3 coats of paint, beeswax was applied as a topcoat while 2 coats of tung oil was added to all stained parts for protection.

It was a pleasure to work with Courtney and hopefully I will see her again down the road.
