Small Dresser refinished in Ash Fusion Mineral Paint

brentmacneil

A while back Cathy reached out to me on my Renew_and_Restorations page about doing a dresser for her. She sent me pics of the piece, told me what she was thinking of doing and we talked about when I had an opening for her to drop it off.

Eventually I texted Cathy telling her I was available so her and her daughter Ava came up. Initially they were thinking of Hazelwood MFP and after inspecting the piece in my garage I took them in the basement to show them some colours and let them look at a few other pieces I had available.

I brought out a jar of Hazelwood with a few other greys as well as some other colours. I for one was hesitant on Hazelwood as I have done a few other pieces and in certain light the colour comes off purple. By changing the colour on my LED lamp, Cathy and her daughter changed their mind on Hazelwood.

Luckily for them, I had a dresser that I just completed in Ash and Dark Walnut stain and they loved it.

Once the colour was selected, it was time to talk design and hardware. Initially we were going with a Dark Walnut stain top with the upper drawer painted and the two lower drawers stained. We were removing the knobs and replacing them with Antique Bronze pulls.

I sanded the entire piece down to the natural grain. Admittedly, with several coats on the piece, sanding was a challenge and took a while. Pulling out the drawers was also a bit of a challenge typically seen from all wood pieces and work would have to be done to make the drawers function as they should.

Once sanded and cleaned, 3 coats of paint was applied to the frame of the dresser. I then applied stain to the top and 2 drawers. I was amazed on how the wood grain popped. I immediately sent some pics and videos to Cathy and Ana to get some feedback.

At one point I sent some pics moving the drawers around to see what they wanted to do and get feedback on where they wanted the painted drawer. Ava liked it at the bottom as did I.

When placing the pulls I was limited to covering up existing holes from prior hardware on the drawers. Each pull had to cover 3 holes. Yes, holes were filled properly and yes the filler took the stain better then expected but it was not 100%. The spots could be seen on each drawer. If these were random spots, it would add to the look but they were uniform on each drawer.

Once the pulls were on, I worked on the drawers to make them slide better. Since the drawers were wood on wood, I sanded everything to smooth out the wood and that helped a bit. I noticed some uneven wear on the top and bottom of each drawer side so I sanded them down and rounded them out. This made a big difference. Lastly I put beeswax everywhere wood came into contact with eachother and the drawers slide like butter on bread now.😀

All stained portions were protected with 2 coats of Tung Oil while the paint was protected with a coat of homemade foodgrade beeswax.
