Here is the second piece Megan gave me. As you can see from the before pic, this piece had no handles, except for a bent wire in one of the drawers to open and close it. Outside of that, the piece was in great shape.
As much as I was tempted to stain the top and 3 drawers, I thought it would be a bit much due to the size of the drawers. I am also trying my hardest to not be a 1 trick pony, so I did things a bit differently this time around.
After sanding the entire piece I filled the holes where the original handles were. I then painted the entire piece in 3 coats of Ash MFP, except for the top that was stained in Dark Walnut. Once the paint dried, I distressed the piece by taking some sandpaper to the edges and other spots to let the woodgrain pop through. After that was done, 3 coats of tung oil was applied to the stained top and homemade foodgrade wax was added the the remainder of the piece for protection.
The last thing for me to do on the piece was to add handles. The original colour of the handles I selected were black so I decided to paint them Oil Rubbed Bronze and add some detail by applying some copper guilding wax. I figured this combination would work well with the distress work I did with the sandpaper and I think I nailed it.
I would classify this as a rustic contemporary finish, but who knows?!? Am I breaking some rules here? Probably, but rules don't always apply.🤐
