I received a text from Pauline inquiring if I would be interested in finishing a piece she had yet to pick up. Seeing the pic, I was immediately interested. I instantly saw 5-6 deisgns and colours I would go with. I then waited to hear back from her if she was able to secure the piece.
I quickly heard from Pauline, shared some ideas with her and gave her a price.
When Pauline and her husband showed up, we chatted while looking over the dresser and agreed on a few ideas which allowed me to move forward.
A few days later I started prepping the piece and saw there was a bit more damage then originally thought. There was a lot of splitting, chipping and delaminating of the veneer paneling on the piece that required gluing, bondo filling and sanding.

Once the prep work was done I thought over the initial design keeping in mind Pauline was not fond of the handles and potentially wanted to replace them. I decided to flip the initial design to paint the areas on the drawers where the handles would go and stain the other areas in case old holes had to be filled and new ones drilled. I shared these ideas with Pauline and she just told me to follow my gut.😀
The piece was painted in 3 coats of Ash MFP and stained in Dark Walnut. After the piece was done, I shared a pic with Pauline with 1 handle painted in oil rubbed bronze, the other in matte black and a different handle in oil rubbed bronze paint with copper guilding wax. To Pauline's surprise, she liked the original handles in oil rubbed bronze paint.
With 1 solution, came another challenge. After freshening up the piece, it became clear the drawers were not level and twisted. I used a paint stick to shim the drawers to make them level and it worked like a charm. I used the thickness of the stick as a guide on top of the slider and traced out the line. From there I pulled out the glider, lined it up on the traced lined and put the gliders in place. We now had properly aligned drawers. A simple trim off the front end of one of the gliders and no more twisting of the drawers.
The painted portion of the piece was protected with a homemade foodgrade beeswax while the stained wood received 3 coats of tung oil for protection.
I really like the end result and the transformation is night and day to me.
Please see the before and after pics as well as some pics of the transformation process.
